Tocotrienol Rich Fraction Reverses Age-Related Deficits in Spatial Learning and Memory in Aged Rats

Little is known about the effect of vitamin E on brain function. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the effect of tocotrienol rich fraction (TRF) on behavioral impairment and oxidative stress in aged rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats (young: 3-months-old; aged: 21-months-old) were treated with either the control (olive oil) or TRF (200 mg/kg) for 3 months. Behavioral studies were performed using the open field test and Morris water maze (MWM) task. Blood was taken for assessment of DNA damage, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and vitamin E, and erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activity. Brains were also collected to measure vitamin E levels. Results showed that aged rats exhibited reduced exploratory activity, enhanced anxiety and decreased spatial learning and memory compared with young rats. DNA damage and plasma MDA were increased, and vitamin E levels in plasma and brain were reduced in aged rats. Aged rats supplemented with TRF showed a markedly reduced level of anxiety, improved spatial learning and memory, reduced amount and severity of DNA damage, a reduced level of MDA, and increased levels of antioxidant enzyme activity and plasma/brain vitamin E compared with age-matched controls. In conclusion, TRF supplementation reverses spatial learning and memory decline and decreases oxidative stress in aged rats.     

Effects of (conductive polypyrrole)‐modified tire dust on the mechanical,electrical, and morphology properties of (low‐density polyethylene)/(tire dust) composites

The effects of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) as a coupling agent on the mechanical properties, morphology, electrical properties, and thermal degradation of (low‐density polyethylene)/(tire dust) (LDPE/TD) composites were studied. LDPE/TD composites with different TD loadings and added PPy were prepared with a Brabender Plasticorder. The LDPE/TD_T (treated with PPy) composites showed higher values of tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and swelling resistance than LDPE/TD composites. Scanning electron microscopy morphology revealed that the interfacial adhesion between the TD and LDPE phases was improved by the addition of conductive PPy. J. VINYL ADDIT. In vitro ageing and wear behaviour of ceria stabilized zirconia toughened alumina (CSZ-TA) bio-ceramic

15–25 wt% zirconia (stabilized with 14 mol% ceria) toughened alumina was synthesized by co-precipitation technique. The synthesized powders were calcined at different temperatures, compacted and conventionally sintered following two steps sintering process. Uniformly distributed submicron sized grains with Vickers' hardness value up to 1730±6HV20 were achieved after conventional sintering. In order to assess the ageing behaviour, samples were hydrothermally treated (in vitro) at 134 °C under 0.2 MPa in presence of simulated body fluid. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns was carried out to estimate the phase content after calcination, sintering and after different stages of hydrothermal treatment. No significant phase change (only ∼3%) was observed even after 100 h of hydrothermal treatment. Very few bulged grains (resulted from the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation) on the surface and slight decrease in hardness value were observed after hydrothermal treatment. Fretting wear in dry condition was carried out taking ball on flat geometry for 10⁵ cycles at different loads before and after hydrothermal treatment. Wear volumes were directly estimated from the surface scanning of the wear scar using profilometer. Transition of wear and its related mechanisms at different loads along with the effect of ageing on wear were discussed.

Role of carrier material in encapsulation of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) by spray drying

ABSTRACT

Yeast was encapsulated using different carrier materials and their combinations to explore the possible synergistic effect of carrier material during encapsulation using spray drying. Freeze-drying was performed for comparison. The dried cell powders were analyzed for the quality aspects (morphology, flowability, and storage stability). The best results were observed, with a combination of whey protein and corn starch (cell survival: 82.37% and yield: 56%, w/w) with a shelf life of 6 months (with only 10% reduction in cell survival). The survival was found to be 40% without any carrier material, which decreased to less than 25% within 4 weeks.
